Zhuhai UM Science & Technology Research Institute
To implement the “Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong- Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area”, strengthen the construction of demonstration zone of in-depth cooperation among Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao, build Macao into a world tourism and leisure center and a commercial and trade cooperation service platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and promote Macao’s participation in the development of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Science and Innovation Corridor, University of Macau (UM) established Zhuhai UM Science & Technology Research Institute (ZUMRI) in Hengqin, Zhuhai, which is its first industry-education-research demonstration base in the Greater Bay Area.
With the research strength of UM’s three state key laboratories and its preponderant disciplines, there are 5 research centers and 1 business training center in the ZUMRI, which are Microelectronics Research Center, Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Center, Smart City Research Center, Medical Research Center, Advanced Materials Research Center and Executive Training Center.
The construction and development of ZUMRI will provide opportunities for the science and technology innovation cooperation between Zhuhai and Macao to support the integration of the Macao into the overall national development, integrate the synergetic development of technological innovation elements between Macao and the mainland, and gather international innovation resources. ZUMRI will also be the technology achievement transformation platform that promotes the transformation and upgrading of industrial technologies in the Greater Bay Area.
Currently ZUMRI is funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) with 64 projects, covering 8 fields including mathematical science, chemical science, life science, earth science, engineering and materials science, information science, management science and medical science. In addition, cooperated with domestic universities and enterprises, ZUMRI has undertaken a number of provincial and municipal science and technology innovation projects.
To further strengthen the close integration of science and technology and economy, as well as accelerate the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and the transfer of advanced technologies, in recent years, ZUMRI has cooperated with many enterprises in the Pearl River Delta in consulting and commissioned research, providing technical consulting services and assisting the enterprises to solve technical and management problems in the production process. The fields include food quality research, microelectronics, construction of economic experimental area, quality research of tradition Chinese medicine.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) was established by UM in 2016. The major work of the CIE is to assist teachers and students in implementing their creative ideas and to provide them with an industry-academia support platform for innovation and entrepreneurship. ZUMRI as an innovative carrier builds a complete transformation and cultivation system for the industrialization of the excellent achievements of basic research and applied research of UM by connecting the manpower the industrial resource.
Research and Development Platform Construction
As the first industry-education-research demonstration base in Greater Bay Area established by University of Macau, the construction and development of ZUMRI has been attached great importance to and fully supported by UM. According to the Outline Development Plan for Guangdong-Hongkong-Macao Greater Bay Area, ZUMRI will build a new pattern of industry-education-research collaboration in Hengqin relying on UM’s preponderant disciplines, seize the development opportunity of the Greater Bay Area to upgrade the regional cooperation, and explore the use of educational output to promote the development of Macao’s technological innovation, develop emerging industries, promote economic moderate diversification and transformation as well. There are 5 research centers and 1 business training center in ZUMRI, including:
(1)Microelectronics Research Center
Relying on the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI which has established the Hengqin branch in ZUMRI, mainly researches and transforms the scientific and technological achievements of microelectronics, such as data conversion, signal processing, wireless communication, biomedical engineering, power electronic controller chips.
(2)Chinese Medicine Research Center
Relying on the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine which has established the Hengqin branch in ZUMRI, researches on the quality effectiveness, safety, stability, controllability and systematicity of traditional Chinese medicine, explores the establishment of international quality standards for traditional Chinese medicine, strengthens the transformation of traditional Chinese medicine and develops various innovative medicines and health products.
(3)Smart City Research Center
Relying on the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City which has established the Hengqin branch in ZUMRI, with urban development as the main line supported by basic research and key technologies, participants in the construction of smart Hengqin, builds an Internet of Things ecosystem for Macao’s urban development, and serves the transformation and upgrading of Macao and the Greater Bay Area.
(4)Translational Medicine Research Center
Relying on the Faculty of Health Sciences of UM, focuses on the research of cancer prevention, metastasis, recurrence, resistance and other key scientific issues to research on the prevention and treatment methods of cancer. It also carries out basic research, applied research and translational research in major fields of chronic disease, human aging, immunology, nervous system diseases and cancer.
(5)Advanced Materials Research Center
Relying on the Faculty of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering of UM, builds a training and research base with Macao characteristics for applied physics and materials engineering, in order to be the lead of new generation of material industry development.
(6)Executive Training Center
Focuses on training and commercial talents and serves the development of emerging industries such as characteristic finance.
